There’s something unforgettable about the sound of a World War II bomber cutting through the sky on Memorial Day. This year, residents and parade-goers in Alton, Illinois, got to experience that thrill in a brand-new way.

On Monday morning, May 25, 2026, a vintage North American B-25 Mitchell bomber made its first-ever appearance over Alton’s 159th annual Memorial Day Parade. Piloted by Mike Marino and Charlie Bramstedt, the twin-engine aircraft flew low and proud right along the parade route, giving spectators and participants an up-close aerial salute they won’t soon forget.

Why This Flyover Mattered

Steve Schwartz, spokesperson for the East End Improvement Association (one of the main parade sponsors), said the B-25’s path was carefully planned. It flew south to north along Washington Avenue, then looped back perpendicular down College Avenue so both people watching from the sidelines and those marching in the parade could get a great view.

“This is the first time it happened with a B-25,” Schwartz shared. “We reached out to the Commemorative Air Force, and we’re really excited about having them.”

The plane’s distinctive rumbling engine sound echoed through the streets of Alton well before it came into sight — a classic reminder of the aircraft that helped shape history during World War II.

The Plane and the People Behind It

The B-25 Mitchell, named after airpower pioneer General Billy Mitchell, played a major role in WWII. It served in every theater of the war and famously took part in the daring 1942 Doolittle Raid on Tokyo.

This particular aircraft belongs to the Missouri Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, based in St. Charles, Missouri. Rob Jenner, the unit leader, explained that the organization’s mission is to preserve and share these historic planes with the public.

“Our goals are to educate, inspire, and honor by collecting one flying example of all the Allied planes from World War II,” Jenner said.

He also noted how special it is to connect with veterans and their families at events like this. “We’re just the custodians privileged to keep them flying,” he added, mentioning that this bomber will turn 82 years old in December. Maintaining these aircraft is no small feat — finding parts and keeping them airworthy is an ongoing challenge for the all-volunteer group.

A Sound You’ll Never Forget

One thing everyone agrees on: you hear a B-25 long before you see it. That deep, throaty roar is one of the most recognizable sounds from the WWII era, and it created a powerful atmosphere as the plane traced the parade route.

For many in attendance, it was more than just a cool flyover — it was a moving tribute to the service members being honored that day.
