It was one of those stories that reminded people why we love underdog tales. A man who lost all four limbs as a baby beat the odds, taught himself to compete at the highest level, and became a symbol of resilience in the world of cornhole. Then, in a single night, everything changed.

On the evening of March 22, 2026, 27-year-old Dayton James Webber of La Plata, Maryland, allegedly shot and killed 27-year-old Bradrick Michael Wells during an argument while driving a car with two other passengers. According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting happened in the La Plata area. Webber reportedly pulled over afterward and asked the backseat passengers to help remove Wells from the vehicle. They refused, got out, flagged down police around 10:25 p.m. near La Plata Road and Radio Station Road, and reported what they’d witnessed.

Webber drove off with Wells still inside. Roughly two hours later, a resident in nearby Charlotte Hall—about 14-15 miles away—called 911 after discovering Wells’ body in a residential yard (some reports specify the side of the road near 10115 Newport Church Road). Detectives eventually tracked Webber’s vehicle to Charlottesville, Virginia. He was located at a local hospital seeking treatment for an unspecified medical issue and was arrested without incident by Albemarle County police. He’s now awaiting extradition to Maryland, where he faces first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and additional related charges, including use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The two backseat witnesses reportedly identified Webber as the shooter and Wells as the victim. Police have stated there’s no evidence suggesting anyone else was involved.

Who Is Dayton Webber?

For years, Webber’s story was purely inspirational. At just 10 months old, he contracted a severe streptococcus pneumonia infection that led to sepsis. Doctors gave him only a 3% chance of survival and had to amputate all four limbs to save his life. Growing up as a quadruple amputee didn’t stop him. He learned to write, race go-karts, and eventually excel at cornhole—a backyard game that became his passion.

He made history as the first quadruple amputee to compete in the American Cornhole League (ACL). The league once called him “unstoppable” and highlighted him as a perfect example of their slogan: “anyone can play, anyone can win.” He appeared in ESPN features, competed in the ACL World Championships in 2021, and even shared in a 2023 essay how cornhole taught him to face daily challenges head-on. He once said he believed God put him on this planet to inspire others to achieve anything they set their minds to.

Webber also posted videos on YouTube showing him shooting firearms—titles often referenced “no hands, no feet shooting.” Some clips that have resurfaced since the arrest show him handling rifles in creative ways despite his amputations.

What Happens Next?

Webber is currently in custody in Virginia and will be extradited to Charles County, Maryland, for arraignment. The investigation is still early, but authorities say the witnesses’ accounts are consistent.

This case has drawn national attention because of Webber’s unique background. People who followed his cornhole journey are understandably shocked. Others are focusing on the tragedy of a 27-year-old man losing his life over what started as an argument among acquaintances.
