MVT’s HEAT 1 offering is an intense but accessible way to get started in civilian tactical training. As a newer MVT student with minimal shooting experience at my first live-fire class, I found HEAT 1’s crawl-walk-run approach an excellent fit for my experience level. No matter what experience a student brings, the four-day class starts in the same place: the flat range. Students begin with simple tasks such as zeroing optics, performing reloads, and rapidly addressing weapon malfunctions. The basic skills learned early in this phase quickly become habits that allow for more intricate skills to be taught later in the flat range phase, including barricade shooting and shoot-move drills with a buddy. All the while, instructors Max and Scott relay lessons learned from their careers, helping students understand why it is important to do things the right way every time.

Much of what is learned on the flat range translates directly into the two-day tactical range phase, where students begin to see how those individual competencies fit together. The intent here is not to turn students into infantrymen, but to build a practical understanding of the AR-15 platform in various scenarios. In the tactical range phase, students run through a series of battle drills and must rely on clear communication to complete each drill. For students like myself who come without a buddy or group, performing drills as part of an ad-hoc “pick-up” team adds an extra layer of challenge, but it is an essential skill to train for and very rewarding when it comes together. All the action takes place under close supervision of Max and Scott, who ensure that each drill is performed to standard and in a safe manner. Safety is consistently emphasized and enforced throughout the course, and the instructors work hard to maintain it.

Overall, HEAT 1 is a well-structured course that builds strong fundamentals on the flat range and transitions students into working in small teams under stress. It provides a solid foundation in both individual weapon handling and basic team communication, whether you are new to live-fire training or already experienced.
